The Southwest by 4x4 camper

A 4x4 camper combines a place to sleep with the grip and ground clearance to handle gravel roads and rough access tracks. Here is when it is worth choosing one, and what to know about where you can drive.

Frequently asked questions

  • No. Roads to the main parks are paved, and an ordinary motorhome or campervan will take you to most places. A 4x4 camper is worth considering if you plan to use gravel roads, camp on BLM public land or travel when snow is likely in the high country.

  • Keep to designated roads. Driving off-road damages the desert, and in national parks it is not allowed. Your rental conditions specify which types of road are allowed, and many rental companies do not allow some unpaved roads.

  • Four-wheel drive helps on snow and ice, but winter driving in the high country, for example around Bryce Canyon, is still demanding: days are short and conditions change fast. Las Vegas itself is mild. Check what is included with each vehicle on its page, and follow the official road reports during your trip.

  • At RV parks and campgrounds, and on BLM public land, where camping is free, usually up to 14 days, with no services. National park campgrounds are booked on recreation.gov, often months ahead. You cannot spend the night in the vehicle on the street on the Strip. Leave no trace.

  • The price depends on the vehicle, the season and the length of your trip. Each card on this page shows a guide price per day. Enter your dates and pick-up location in the search to see the exact price in USD, and what it includes, before you book.
