Exploring the Southwest by campervan

A campervan is the nimble way to see the Southwest: small enough for town streets and trailhead parking lots, big enough to sleep, cook and carry everything you need. Read on for practical tips on choosing a van, overnight stops and routes that suit it best.

Frequently asked questions

  • For couples, friends and small families, yes. A campervan gives you a bed, storage and usually somewhere to cook, and you will spend most of your time outside anyway. If you want a bathroom on board, more room to sit indoors or you are traveling with a bigger group, a motorhome may suit you better.

  • Not quite anywhere. You can stay at RV parks and campgrounds, and on BLM public land you can camp for free, usually up to 14 days, with no services. You cannot spend the night in the van on the street on the Strip. Casino and supermarket parking lots depend on each place: ask and look for signs.

  • Yes. Zion is about 165 miles (265 km) from Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon South Rim about 275 miles (445 km). Most campervans fit on the main park roads, which is a plus over a big RV. The Zion–Mount Carmel tunnel needs a tunnel permit for vehicles 7'10" (2.4 m) wide or 11'4" (3.4 m) tall or more, and the Zion Canyon is usually reached with the free park shuttle.

  • In the US, campervans are driven on a regular driver's license. The license, minimum age and other requirements for each vehicle depend on the rental company and are listed on its page.

  • The price depends on the vehicle, the season and the length of your trip. Each card on this page shows a guide price per day. Enter your dates and pick-up location in the search to see the exact price in USD, and what it includes, before you book.
