RENTAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS

This summary covers the Travellers Autobarn USA rental terms effective 8 May 2026, for campervan and station wagon rentals. The Rental Agreement signed at collection is the governing contract; extra state rules apply in California and Nevada.

VEHICLE COLLECTION AND RETURN

Vehicles can be collected between 09:00 and 16:00 and must be returned before 15:00, Monday to Saturday. Rental offices are closed on Sundays and on federal and state holidays. After an out of hours return, the customer remains responsible for the vehicle until staff inspect it, and charges may continue to accrue.

A 59 minute grace period applies after the agreed return time; beyond it, a USD 250 late fee applies, plus USD 250 per further day until the vehicle is returned.

No refund is given for late collection or early return. If an early return leaves more than 14 unused days, a credit voucher may be issued for the days beyond 14 if approved in writing before the return, at an adjusted daily rate, excluding extras and protection products and less a USD 100 administrative fee.

DRIVER REQUIREMENTS

All drivers must be at least 21 years old and hold a valid full driving licence for the vehicle class, presented at collection. A licence not written in English needs an International Driving Permit or an accredited English translation. Every driver must be listed on and sign the Rental Agreement; only they may drive.

RENTAL DURATION, MILEAGE AND ONE WAY FEES

Rental days are calendar days: the collection day counts as day one and the return day counts as the last day, whatever the time. The minimum rental period is 3 to 10 days depending on the season.

The base rate includes unlimited mileage, subject to the travel restrictions below. A one way fee may apply when the vehicle is not returned to the collection city, varying by location, season and rental length. A service fee may apply for vehicle preparation. All charges are payable in US dollars.

PAYMENT AND DEPOSIT

A minimum down payment of USD 200 confirms a direct booking. The balance is payable at collection by cash, debit or credit card. Visa, MasterCard and American Express carry a non refundable 4% payment administration fee.

Instead of a fixed security deposit, a reasonable amount above the estimated total charges is reserved on the payment card. The excess is released after the rental, with refunds processed within 7 days after a final audit.

FUEL, PROPANE AND VEHICLE CARE

The vehicle leaves with a full fuel tank and propane bottle and must return the same way. Missing fuel is charged at local prices plus a USD 50 refuelling fee; an unfilled propane bottle costs USD 50 unless prepaid propane was purchased. Customers must check oil, coolant and tyres daily and report any defect immediately; driving on with a known defect, while overheating, or through flooded roads can void all protection cover.

OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT

Living and camping kits cost USD 45 for 2 and 3 berth campervans and USD 75 for 4 berth (a fifth person's equipment adds USD 25). Station wagon camping kits cost USD 45. Child seats cost USD 45 per rental; infant seats fit only in station wagons and Hi5 campervans (babies six months or older in the Hi5). GPS units cost USD 7 per day (maximum USD 140) and tablets USD 10 per day (maximum USD 200).

CLEANING, SMOKING AND PETS

The vehicle must come back washed, vacuumed and uncluttered, or a USD 100 standard cleaning fee applies; an excessively dirty vehicle incurs at least USD 200 extra. Smoking, vaping, candles and mosquito coils are prohibited.

Pets are allowed only in the Kuga Campervan and Hitop Camper: maximum two pets, declared and approved at booking, with a non refundable USD 150 pet fee. Undisclosed pets incur a USD 250 fee, and pet damage is never covered by any protection product. Animals found in any other vehicle type mean a minimum USD 250 cleaning fee.

DAMAGE RESPONSIBILITY AND PROTECTION OPTIONS

The customer is responsible for damage to or loss of the vehicle. Statutory liability insurance at the minimum limits required by state law is included. Accidents must be reported to the police and the rental company within 24 hours.

The optional Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) removes the customer's financial responsibility for damage to or loss of the vehicle; in California it costs USD 13 to 16 per day depending on the vehicle. CDW does not cover prohibited use such as towing, driving under the influence, unpaved roads or unauthorised drivers. Optional Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) raises third party cover to USD 500,000. Both may duplicate cover from personal insurance or credit cards.

TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS

Vehicles may be driven only on paved roads or well maintained access roads of under 500 yards to recognised campgrounds. Driving on unpaved roads may void all cover. Mexico is strictly prohibited, Alaska is not permitted, and Death Valley is off limits between 1 May and 30 September. Canada is allowed only with prior consent and a USD 750 Canada Entry Fee (USD 1,500 if taken without consent). Taking a vehicle to Burning Man requires a non refundable USD 1,000 supplementary fee, or a USD 1,500 penalty if undeclared.

BREAKDOWNS AND ASSISTANCE

24 hour emergency roadside assistance is provided. Callouts caused by customer error (running out of fuel, flat tyres, a dead battery, keys locked inside) are charged to the customer by the assistance provider. Minor repairs under USD 100 may be made without approval and are reimbursed against invoices; larger repairs need prior written approval. If the vehicle is inoperable, compensation is limited to a refund of rental fees for the repair days or a replacement vehicle, and problems must be reported within 24 hours. Failures of the stereo, cabin lights, air conditioning, fridge, microwave or water pump are not breakdowns.

BOOKING CHANGES AND EXTENSIONS

Changes made more than 28 days before collection are free. A USD 100 change fee applies 15 to 28 days before collection, and USD 250 within 14 days of collection or during the rental. Changes that shorten the rental within 28 days of collection are not refunded; the originally booked days remain payable. Extensions and drop off changes need written confirmation from central reservations, and a change of drop off location carries a relocation fee of up to USD 500.
