How pick-up works in Salt Lake City
After booking you'll receive your confirmation by email. Before the rental starts we send you the address and directions to the pick-up point in Salt Lake City.
On the day you sign the rental agreement, get the keys and are shown how everything in the vehicle works and how to return it. Please be on time: every vehicle is cleaned and checked between rentals, so pick-up and return slots are fixed. Have these with you:
- The renter's passport or ID
- The original driver's license of every driver (plus an International Driving Permit if it is not in English)
- A credit card for the security deposit (the card holder must be present)
- Your booking confirmation
Before you drive off from Salt Lake City
A few things that make the first days on the road easier:
- Take the first miles slowly. An RV is longer, taller and heavier than a car: note its height and length before your first drive-through, gas station canopy or low bridge, and ask the agent at pick-up how to back up and park it.
- Stock up on water, food and ice before leaving town, as services can be hours apart in the desert. Carry more water than you think you need, and keep the tank full.
- Plan realistic driving days. Distances in the Southwest are long, speed limits are in mph, and mobile coverage is poor in many parks: download offline maps. Mind the time zones (Arizona does not change its clocks in summer, except on the Navajo Nation) when you book tours.
- In summer, temperatures often go over 105°F (40°C). Drive in the morning, check tire pressure and engine temperature, and never leave people or pets in a parked vehicle. Monsoon storms from July to September can cause flash floods, so stay out of washes and slot canyons.
- Use RV parks and dump stations to fill up with fresh water and to empty the gray and black water tanks. Never empty them in nature. National park campgrounds are booked at recreation.gov, often months ahead.
- Sleep at RV parks, campgrounds or, if you are prepared for no services, on public BLM land. Never drive off-road, and respect the signs. If your route goes through Zion, ask about the Zion–Mount Carmel tunnel: many RVs are too wide or tall to pass without a tunnel permit, and the park often requires the shuttle in the main canyon.
- Watch out for livestock and wildlife on the road, especially at dawn and dusk, and use a lower gear on long downhills. Fill up before long stretches without services, and return the vehicle with the same fuel level it had at pick-up.
