How pick-up works in San Francisco

After booking you'll receive your confirmation by email. Before the rental starts we send you the address and directions to the pick-up point in San Francisco.
On the day you sign the rental agreement, get the keys and are shown how everything in the vehicle works and how to return it. Please be on time: every vehicle is cleaned and checked between rentals, so pick-up and return slots are fixed. Have these with you:
  • The renter's passport or ID
  • The original driver's license of every driver (plus an International Driving Permit if it is not in English)
  • A credit card for the security deposit (the card holder must be present)
  • Your booking confirmation

Before you drive off from San Francisco

A few things that make the first days on the road easier:
  • Take the first miles slowly. An RV is longer, taller and heavier than a car: note its height and length before your first drive-through, gas station canopy or low bridge, and ask the agent at pick-up how to back up and park it.
  • Stock up on water, food and ice before leaving town, as services can be hours apart in the desert. Carry more water than you think you need, and keep the tank full.
  • Plan realistic driving days. Distances in the Southwest are long, speed limits are in mph, and mobile coverage is poor in many parks: download offline maps. Mind the time zones (Arizona does not change its clocks in summer, except on the Navajo Nation) when you book tours.
  • In summer, temperatures often go over 105°F (40°C). Drive in the morning, check tire pressure and engine temperature, and never leave people or pets in a parked vehicle. Monsoon storms from July to September can cause flash floods, so stay out of washes and slot canyons.
  • Use RV parks and dump stations to fill up with fresh water and to empty the gray and black water tanks. Never empty them in nature. National park campgrounds are booked at recreation.gov, often months ahead.
  • Sleep at RV parks, campgrounds or, if you are prepared for no services, on public BLM land. Never drive off-road, and respect the signs. If your route goes through Zion, ask about the Zion–Mount Carmel tunnel: many RVs are too wide or tall to pass without a tunnel permit, and the park often requires the shuttle in the main canyon.
  • Watch out for livestock and wildlife on the road, especially at dawn and dusk, and use a lower gear on long downhills. Fill up before long stretches without services, and return the vehicle with the same fuel level it had at pick-up.

RV rental in San Francisco: frequently asked questions

What travelers usually ask before picking up in San Francisco.

  • The address of the pick-up point in San Francisco is shown on this page and in your booking, and before the rental starts you'll receive directions by email. Pick-up points are not always in the city centre, so check the address when you plan your arrival.
  • One-way rentals are possible with some vehicles and routes. Tick 'Return at a different location' in the search and choose where you want to finish: the results show the vehicles that allow it for your dates. A one-way fee usually applies.
  • Pick-up and return slots depend on the vehicle and on the opening hours of the pick-up point. You choose them from the available times during booking, after selecting your vehicle.
  • Availability changes with the season and with your dates. Search with San Francisco as the pick-up location to see the RVs, motorhomes and campervans you can book, each with the total price of the rental.
  • The renter's passport or ID, the original driver's license of every driver (plus an International Driving Permit if your license is not in English) and a credit card for the security deposit. The card can belong to any of the travelers, as long as the card holder is present.
  • As early as you can for the high season (June to August) and the holidays, when demand is at its highest. April, May, September and October are medium season, and November to March is the quietest. Last-minute availability is limited, so check the dates you want as soon as your plans are set.
